Classic Graves Returns: Riot Games lets the community vote on content priorities in League of Legends Classic
There are no win rates in the fourth update of League of Legends Classic. No tournament standings, no bans or pick percentages. Yet this patch tells more than many traditional esports stories, because Riot Games has brought back what the community had been waiting for since this nostalgic mode was revealed: Classic Graves, with the shotgun reload mechanic that defined his identity.
This is not the live competitive client. League of Legends Classic is a legacy mode where Riot restores old champion kits, rebuilds older jungle and vision systems, and experiments with a community governance model. The fourth update, presented by longtime Riot developer David 'Phreak' Turley, adds Graves alongside Fizz, Nami, and Nautilus. It also includes buffs to Akali, Galio, Kassadin, Poppy, and Shyvana, while nerfing Fiora, Morgana, and Twisted Fate.
The deeper story is the Council vote. Players earn voting power by playing the mode, and the first ballot found that 52.8% considered match duration appropriate, while 48.8% rated snowballing as stable. Those are pluralities, not majorities. The framing of community consensus only on the positive side creates an information gap, especially since Riot did not publish dissenting numbers for the other proposed changes.
The update also arrives with acknowledged quality issues. Riot says bot reports are not as serious as social media suggests, but admits the player classification system has problems. New players can be placed into wrong skill tiers, making them look like bots to veterans and ruining the experience for both sides.
Classic LoL has no direct impact on professional esports tournaments or rosters. Its real significance is as a retention and governance experiment. If the Council vote genuinely shapes content direction, it could become a model for the wider industry. If not, it will be seen as curated participation. The next update, scheduled for September 23, along with the next Council vote, will reveal whether this nostalgia service has staying power or fades after the excitement of returning champions wears off.
