The Empty Chair at the Analysis Desk: Football Needs Facts, Not Fabricated Words

Fifty-two years since I entered the sports department of Belgrade Television, I have learned one rule: a story is never born from a void. A good football article needs two ingredients: verified events and an atmosphere the writer has heard with his own ears. I have covered eight World Cups, many Olympic Games, and seasons in Paris, but I have never seen a real goal appear in an empty report. A match always begins with a concrete touch of the ball, not with a summary. When an information system returns no data, a writer has two choices: wait in silence or invent something. The second choice betrays both football and journalism. Modern football is full of noise. Social media talks about transfers, media talks about dressing-room conflict, and algorithms imagine a world where every article can be generated. But if a writer receives an analysis with no information, his words are only captions for a photograph that does not exist. My fear is not a lack of topics. The deepest fear of a journalist is to see an empty space and fill it with clichés. As a sidelines chronicler, I treat missing data as a systemic signal, not a fault to be hidden. When there is no event, eight dimensions of analysis are impossible: tactics, finance, results, competition, regulation, dressing room, risk, and media narrative. Tactics without data become radio commentary. Finance without numbers becomes a rumour. A dressing-room story without witnesses becomes fiction. Russia and the Kazan summer of 2026 taught me that one tiny repeated detail can speak louder than any statement. But to see that detail, there must first be a match, a training session, a human being. When there is nothing, the most disciplined response is clear: without data, do not write. I often remind myself that the training ground never lies. It merely whispers to those willing to sit down. This morning, my training ground is an empty document. The document gives me no sound. I cannot record the rhythm of a team that has not appeared. Football analysis is like coaching: you cannot use a tactic when you have never seen your players run. In football, the state of no-information is sometimes a chance to prepare better. In journalism, that state is a chance to say no to superficiality. There is a myth that digital newsrooms must constantly publish, and silence is failure. My observation over many seasons shows the opposite. An article lacking data creates an illusion of knowledge and erodes reader trust faster than an openly false report. As I have watched clubs before their Champions League stumbles, the mistake never begins on match night. It begins in August, when the club allows small gaps in training to grow larger. An empty seat in midfield can bring down the whole structure. A news item without a source works the same way. Fans may forgive a concise article. They will not forgive an article built entirely from the writer's imagination. Paris, this season, has taught me that keeping rhythm means knowing when to stop. I will not fill the empty analysis with beautiful names. I will not use goals to hide the absence of evidence. In this case, returning an un-analysable result is itself the most reliable analysis. My notebook today contains a single line: stay a little longer, listen a little more carefully, write a little less. The training ground is still there, even when it has not yet spoken.
