Lowri Hurd's first season in Para table tennis was never going to be a quiet introduction. The 18-year-old from Wales stepped onto international podiums in Spain, Slovenia and Thailand, but the real story happened behind the medals. British Para Table Tennis moved her from the Pathway Squad to the Performance Squad after just a few months of Para competition. That is a signal of speed, trust and expectation. Hurd did not grow up inside the Para system. She came from able-bodied table tennis and had to learn a completely different game. She also lives with Myhre Syndrome, a rare condition that may affect multiple body systems over time. Because of that, the classification process in Spain was essential, and the positive classification into women's class 9 gave the federation a stable foundation to invest in her. Shaun Marples, Interim Performance Director, openly said she was thrown in at the deep end. Instead of protecting her with easy draws, the system placed her against elite opponents. She collected medals, but she also experienced tough draws against leading Chinese and Brazilian players. A fifth-set loss to Brazil's Danielle Rauen stood out, as did several other deciding-set defeats. Those losses matter, but the sample size is still small for an athlete who has just begun her Para journey. A more meaningful result was a win over Alexa Szvitacs, a world and European champion. In one match, Hurd showed she could beat a player at the highest ceiling of class 9. Her own tactical analysis of Para table tennis is also telling: she describes it as a bit slower but demands much better ball placement. That understanding separates her from an athlete who simply tries to transfer physical habits from able-bodied sport. The federation appears to value Hurd as a possible asset not only in singles but also in women's doubles and mixed doubles. Her move to Sheffield to train at the English Institute of Sport, while starting university, underlines the structural investment in her future. Yet the main risk is hidden beneath the positive story. Para classification can be reviewed, and a change of class would disrupt all plans. Managing the load of an athlete with Myhre Syndrome is another quiet challenge. The encouraging part is that British Para Table Tennis seems willing to treat Hurd as a long-term project, not a quick-harvest talent. She needs more matches, more pressure moments, and more exposure to elite opponents before expectations become definitive. The coming years will show whether her debut season was just a promising opening or the beginning of a deeper transformation.
